Love Your Body Monologues- Video Performances 2011

On February 21st, 2011, Jones College Commons was host to the 2011 performance of Love Your Body Monologues. Below we will be adding videos of each of our performers from this year. The Love Your Body Monologues are held as part of the Wellness Center's "Love Your Body Month", a month long program geared towards raising awareness of body image issues on campus and to help students achieve better body image confidence within themselves.

Issues concerning our bodies are everywhere.  Everyday we are bombarded with images with what we should look like.  We are a culture obsessed with appearance.  Unfortunately, obtaining a certain appearance is associated with success and correlated with certain rights; the right to be respected, right to be loved, right to be noticed, right to wear nice clothing, right to eat what we want.  Sadly, here at Rice we are no different. Body image issues face both females and males alike.  Students at Rice whose thoughts and behaviors about food, eating, self image, and self worth that have become so illogical and so out of control and intense, that they are defined as medical conditions, referred to as eating disorders.

Eating disorders don’t just happen- they happen for a variety of reasons. Contrary to other diseases, such as STDs—we don’t talk about eating disorders.  Love Your Body Monologues are adopted from the same format as the popular performance, Vagina Monologues.  The monologue format allows individuals to share their own personal experiences with body image issues and eating disorders.   Intimate words of Rice students past and present are read by volunteers. Some are sad, some concerning, some offer hope, listen to their words, consider their words, and take some time to love your body. You may find some of these monologues distressing-please note the resources found at the bottom of this page for places to talk about or get help if you or someone you know is suffering from body image issues or an eating disorder.  Please enjoy and share--the more these videos are viewed the more awareness and help can be given to students who suffer.

"Through reading and listening to these monologues-I felt as though there is something in each one that I could relate to or a feeling that I could identify with.  I feel as though a lot of students at Rice could identify in the same way..." -LYBM 2011 Performer

Ice Skating at Discovery Green

Great source of family fun!

The skates are comfortable.. just make sure you remember socks!

You're never too old for a visit from Santa!
Staying in Houston over Winter break and looking for something to do? Looking to blow off some steam and relax after studying for finals? Or just looking for something fun to do outdoors as the weather gets chillier? Look no further than Discovery Green's outdoor ice skating rink! The downtown Houston skyline is the perfect backdrop for outdoor skating on a rink that uses recycled water from Kinder Lake and is powered by renewable energy.

I must admit, I'm not very graceful when it comes to walking around in regular old tennis shoes. So, thoughts of taking my somewhat clumsy self to the ice on thin blades was enough to make my already quivering knees, weak with nerves. But the outdoor scenery and the excitement from fellow skaters, not to mention the delicious hot cocoa and the holiday music and cheer, was enough to put me in the skating spirit!

Here's what I LOVED about skating at Discovery Green:

  1. Fun for all ages! There were families, young couples, kids, and teenagers all having a blast!
  2. It's a workout! I have to admit, after about 10 laps or so, I was tuckered out!
  3. No experience necessary! Whether you're brand new to skating, or whether you can skate backwards like a pro, everyone is welcome on the ice.
  4. Refreshments! There's nothing like a hot cocoa or a mint chocolate latte to warm you up on a chilly day.
  5. You may get to see Santa! We arrived at the rink around 4:30 on a Saturday, and about 45 minutes into our skating experience, Santa himself came out for a spin on the ice.

Discovery Green is located at 1500 McKinney St.

The skating rink is open daily from November 25, 2010 – January 17, 2011

ALLIGATORS in TEXAS!

Looking for something fun and active to do on the weekends that is unique to Texas?  I would suggest taking a trip out to Brazos Bend State Park which is approximately 40 minutes southwest of campus.  There are miles of hiking trails that you can bike or walk.  There is also fishing, camping, and alligators!  It is a cool and different hiking experience to see these animals wild and up close.  It is only 5 bucks to get into the park too!  Please visit the parks website at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/brazos_bend/ for directions and more information.

Yoga that's Free!

Into yoga but just can't budget that class fee?  No worries, Discovery Green, the park located downtown offers free "Yoga in the Park".  I have been practicing yoga for a number of years and have taken my share of good and not so good classes.  It seems that every yogi has their own opinion on what qualifies as a good yoga class.  I really liked "Yoga in the Park" because of the following reasons:
1.  It's outside. Who doesn't love fresh air?
2.  Its challenging, yet simple enough for whatever your level is.  The instructor, Jerry Randall, offers modifications or more diffcult poses based on your level. He is also very humble and instructs you to take it at your own pace.  Hey--sometimes I just want to lay in corpse pose while everyone else is doing a back bend, it's okay here:)
3.  It's popular.  There is something more motivating when practicing with a bunch of people.  They were at least 30 people there when I went!
4.  It's close.  Only about 4 miles away--close enough to bike!
5.  It's free!  So even if you hate it, you are not losing out at least giving it a try!

They also provide yoga mats so no need to spend extra $$ on buying a mat either!

"Yoga in the Park" is held Saturdays at 9:30am.  There are also other fitness classes available for free at the park.  Visit the website: www.discoverygreen.com for more information.
